Russian-born American Film Producer, Director and Actor. After World War I, he began his stage career with the Moscow Art Theater. Fleeing his homeland during the Bolshevik revolution, he resettled in France. While performing in the Paris production of "Russe Revue" in 1922, impresario Lee Schubert brought Ratoff and the show to Broadway and the actor decided to stay. In 1932 he made his Hollywood debut as an actor. He acted alongside actress Mae West in "I'm No Angel",(1932), and Alice Faye in "Sally, Irene and Mary" (1938). His most famous role was as Broadway producer Max Fabian who tangles with Bette Davis' stage diva Margo Channing in "All About Eve" (1950). As a film director, his notable film credits include such classics as "Intermezzo: A Love Story" (1939), with Ingrid Bergman and Leslie Howard, "The Corsican Brothers" (1941), with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Akim Tamiroff, "Oscar Wilde" (1960), his last work. In the same year Ratoff died in Solothurn, Switzerland at the age of 62. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6104 Hollywood Blvd, for his contribution to the motion picture industry.
