John was a 1st generation Norwegian American. His father (Ole Olsen Valdum) and his mother (Ella Asbøll) both came from Norway with their parents when teenagers.

He had a sister, Clara, who died at 20 days old. His mother died only 1 month after his sister. Leaving John, at the tender age of 2, to be raised by his father. John's father never remarried.

On John's WWI registration card it lists him as; Medium Height, Medium Build, Light Blue Eyes, Light Colored Hair. He did not serve time in the military though.

John married 1st Gladys Pearl Casey and later married 2nd Catherine Bertha Ahrendt. John died in December of 1972 just 6 months after his father who died in June of 1972 at the tender age of 101.

John shares his headstone with his second wife.
