William "Bill" F. Burns, 85, of Fairfield passed away of cancer on Monday, March 2, 2009.
Bill was born on Sept. 17, 1923, in Bellaire, Ohio. He graduated from Bellaire High School. At 17, he won the Golden Gloves in the featherweight boxing division and was a high school wrestling champ.
He married Betty Lou Evans and had one daughter. They later divorced. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps at 19, fought in the Pacific Theater, then joined the U.S. Air Force and fought in the Korean War. He married Hiroko Iwamoto in Japan and returned to the United States.
He was the No. 1 recruiter in Ohio. He retired after 22 years of service at Travis Air Force Base. He later retired from the Travis School District, Mare Island and the City of Vacaville. He enjoyed fishing, his dachshunds and taking long walks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elias and Ada Sherwood; sisters Thelma Arno and Harriet Crosby, both of Bellaire, Ohio. His wife, Hiroko Iwamoto, died in 2002. He leaves behind five children, Susan (Larry) Willis of North Carolina, Patti (Lee) Thoming of Eugene, Ore., Michael (Patricia) Burns of Hillsboro, Ore., Robert (Debbie) Burns of Suisun City, Calif., and Sue (Don) Da Gabrielle of Houston, Texas.; brother Robert Sherwood of Denver, Colo.; sister Irella Rush of Bellaire, Ohio; and 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service with full military honors will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 6, at Vaca Hills Chapel Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery.
