Mary Ann Cavalier, 70, of 440 Kittery Ridge Drive passed away at 9:31 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, in Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born March 20, 1938, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Edward J. and Frances Burns Sheridan.

She attended the former St. Mary Parochial Grade School and was a graduate of New Castle High School. She retired in 2000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of Vital Records in New Castle, where she was a clerk for 25 years. She was also the secretary-treasurer of AFSCME Local 2353 for 10 years and the union steward for 20 years. She was a member of St. Mary Church of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish and a former member of St. Joseph the Worker Church.She enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren, and participating in church activities. she was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and will be remembered by many for her numerous acts of charity.

Survived by her husband, Richard E. Cavalier, whom she married Aug. 22, 1959; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jan Cavalier, and Beth and Jim Caravella, all of New Castle; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Beth Cavalier of Spotsylvania, Va., and Chris and Susie Cavalier of Garner, N.C.; three grandchildren, Aleigha Cavalier, with whom she lived, Carley Caravella of New Castle and Amber Wilson of Garner; a grandson, Chase Caravella of New Castle; and a brother, John J. "Jack" Sheridan and his wife, Josephine, of Morristown, Tenn.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Scott Joseph Cavalier; and two brothers, Timothy Michael Sheridan, who died in infancy, and Edward E. Sheridan.

Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St.A procession will leave the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for St. Mary Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. The Rev. Victor J.
