Son of Walter James and Prudence Harris Carlton. At the age of 19, (8 Feb 4 1862) he enlisted in Company D, 14th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and served for 3 years of the Civil War. He was discharged on 8 Feb 1965. He married Agnes Salantine on 12 Dec 1866 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.
The family lived in the Chippewa County, La Crosse County and Trempealeau County areas. In November 1916, Walter and Agnes moved to the Wisconsin Veteran's home where they lived until his death in 1925.
Walter and Agnes had one daughter, Kathryn Prudence, born 11 October 1867, in Montevideo, Chippewa County.
