Daniel E. Clay is the son of Jonathan Clay and Elizabeth Lancaster. He first married Mary Elizabeth Wiant on October 24, 1865 in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa. Mary Elizabeth died on April 8, 1890 and is buried in Union Chapel Cemetery in Osceloa. He remarried in Iowa before moving to Minnesota and eventually to Medford, Oregon.

Corporal Daniel E. Clay served in the Civil War with the 4th Ohio Cavalry, from 1 Jul 1863 through 12 Mar 1864.
