Isaac Clevenger was a son of a Civil War veteran, Sgt. Alexander "Alex" Clevenger Jr., who served with the Union Army. Isaac's mother was Sarah Bailey, who had been married previously to one of Alex's cousins, a Confederate soldier and a victim of the Civil War. Sarah died when Isaac was 9 years old. After Sarah's death, Alex married Eliza Bridges.

Isaac and Lucinda Bryant, daughter of Ananias Bryant and Sarah Sisk, married in 1895. They raised their family, 2 boys and 3 girls, in the English Creek Community.

Isaac had 3 brothers. Loranzo and Morgan moved to Texas. Richard lived in the Carson Springs Community. Isaac had a half-sister, Lillie (Mrs. William Thomas) who lived in Bybee.
