Pvt. Horatio N. Austin was a member of General Alfred Sully's expedition into northwestern Dakota Territory in 1864. In 1862, the Dakota Indians in Minnesota, frustrated by their situation for a variety of reasons, launched an attack on the whites, killing hundreds. In 1864, Sully's expedition came upon a large Indian camp at Killdeer Mountain, and attacked it on July 28, 1864. During the battle, Austin was on foot, climbing a steep slope when he was shot in the forehead. He and the other soldier killed that day, Sgt. George Northrup, were buried that night. The inscription on Austin's gravestone reads "Horatio N. Austin, Co. D., Brackett's Minn. Cav." Austin's story is related on pages 109 and 111 of "Dakota Uprising Victims: Gravestones & Stories," published in 2007 by Curtis Dahlin.
