Rufford Gordon Bennett, 87, son of the late Rufford Wayne Bennett and Virgie Lois Looney Bennett was born Aug. 22, 1915, at Elm Store, Ark., and died Jan. 15, 2003, in West Plains, Mo.
He was married Oct. 10, 1936, in Alton, Mo. to Bessie Lorine Mitchell, who preceded him in death Sept. 16, 2002.
He was a member of Garfield Freewill Baptist Church and was a retired carpenter.
He was a devoted and caring husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include nine children -- Glenda Upton and husband, William Darrell of St. Charles, Mo., Kendell Bennett and wife, Sharon of Pocahontas, B.W. Bennett and wife, Jewell of Pocahontas, Bessie Ritchey and husband, Bobby of Ravenden, Neal Bennett and wife, Gloria of Bloomingdale, Ga., Virginia White and husband, Douglas of Taylor Mill, Ky., Jeneta Turner and husband, Perry of Thayer, Clifton Bennett and wife, Janet of Couch, Mo., and Dean Bennett and wife, LaRue of Myrtle, Mo.; his daughter-in-law, Betty Bennett of Frederick, Md.; one sister, Maxine Prewitt and husband, Ralph of Maryland Heights, Mo.; 30 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Russell Bennett; one great-grandson, Joshua Cline; and two brothers -- Clifford Utah Bennett and Willard Clinton Bennett.
Services were Jan. 18 at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Rev. Howard Huddle and Rev. James Lee Reed both officiating.
Burial was in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Elm Store, Ark, with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
Pallbearers were Clinton Bennett, Jeff Bennett, Scotty Bennett, Jeremy Turner, Kenny Bennett and Derrick Bennett.
Honorary pallbearers were Shawn Upton, Robert Bennett and Justin Bennett.
