DeRell Wright Skinner, 52, of Thayne, died Sept 15, 1986 at Parkview Hospital, Idaho Falls. Funeral services were held Thursday Sept 18 in the Thayne Ward with Bishop Kirk Dana officiating.
DeRell was born in Thayne on July 12, 1934 to Howard and Nellie Skinner. He married Della May McWilliams in 1955 in Big Piney, Wyo.
He spent part of his youth attending local schools, but because his parents were involved with the lumber business, he also attended school in the timber camp. He graduated from high school in Afton and was also a seminary graduate.
He attended Utah State University in Logan for three years where he majored in forestry. While in college, he enjoyed his participation in the rodeo club and was president of the square dance club.
DeRell was called to serve his country and was stationed with the Army at Fort sill, Okla. He was proud of his military service and after his honorable discharge on Jan 20, 1960, he served with the Army Reserve for six years.
DeRell cultivated an interest in mechanics while working at Star Studs and later made this interest his occupation eventually having his own diesel automobile repair service in Thayne.
An av id outdoorsman he spent countless hours hunting and fishing in the mountains that he loved so well.
His love for life and family also extended into the community of which he was a part in his lifetime of service to the Star Valley EMT's and Star Valley Search and Rescue Organizations. He also served on the Lincoln County Ambulance Board for five years, the Recreation Commission and was a member of the Thayne Volunteer Fire Department. While he was chief one of his major accomplishments was establishing the fire station and acquiring the first tanker truck.
Because of his knowledge of the need of Emergency Care with the Star Valley Search and Rescue he had the desire to further his education in emergency medicine. He accomplished this by joining the Star Valley EMT organization ten years ago and was active until the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife, Della May, Thayne, two sons Dusty of Afton, Denny of Farson and his parents, Howard and Nellie of Thayne, Wyo.
