Jacquelyn Kovaciny, 80, a resident of Parsons Presbyterian Manor, Parsons, Kansas, died there at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2006. She had been in failing health.
She was born Jan. 7, 1926, in Galena, Kansas to Barney E. and Audrey F. (Poole) Bliss.
She grew up in Galena and graduated from Galena High School. Later she earned an associate of arts degree from Coffeyville Community College.
On June 2, 1946, she married George Kovaciny in Galena, Kansas.
During the 1945-46 school year, she taught the third and fourth-grade class at Galena Elementary School.
The Kovacinys lived in several places before moving to Parsons in 1987. They were in Castleton, VT, Coffeyville, KS, Manhattan, KS, Norman, OK, Altus, OK, Moore, OK, Oklahoma City, OK, and St. Louis, MO.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Parsons and was an ordained elder in the church. She also had taught Sunday school classes.
While living in Moore, OK, the Kovacinys helped start a Presbyterian Church with 14 other charter members. She had always been active in church work and in other volunteer work in the places she lived.
After moving to Parsons she performed many hours of volunteer work at Presbyterian Manor. She also was a volunteer chaplain at Labette County Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, George Kovaciny of the Presbyterian Manor; and a daughter, Cathryn Louise (Kovaciny) Jelinek of Vienna, Austria.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Leslie Leonard, Lorraine Norvell, Carol Riley, and Jane Capehart.
Mrs. Kovaciny bequeathed her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center.
The family suggests memorials to the Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund. These may be left at or sent to Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Box 942, Parsons, 67357.
