Benny Berry was the son of James W. Berry and Alma Fincher. He married Gladys Lorene Berry and together they had a son James D. Berry. At one time Gladys and Benny had a diner on Burnet Rd, in Austin, Texas. After that they both were employed by the Travis County Sheriff's Office, Benny as a Deputy and Gladys as a Dispatcher. On Feb. 1, 1967, Benny went to a home on Grover Avenue to serve a warrant. After identifying himself he entered the residence. He was immediatley shot in the heart and died at the scene. The call of "Officer Down" was recieved at the Sheriff's office by his wife Gladys. He was buried with full honors.
