19th Century American Sculptor, Painter, and Crayon Portraitist, Writer
Born in Saccarappa (near Hollis) Maine, Charles Akers studied in Rome, Italy (1850s) with his brother, Benjamin Paul Akers, also a sculptor. During this time, he wrote for the Atlantic Monthly. Known for his busts of famous Americans such as William Pitt Fessenden, Lucretia Mott, the abolitionist, James Russell & Mrs. Lowell, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Homes, Charles Eliot Norton, which are publicly displayed throughout various cities. Following his service during the Civil War, "Karl" was an active sculptor in Portland, Maine (mid 1860s), New York City (mid 1860s) and Buffalo, NY (1867-1869); Waterbury, Connecticut (1875) where he became associated with the Waterbury artists of the time. By 1878, he had begun working in crayon drawings. Among the crayon portraits made by him were those of James Russell Lowell, Herbert Spencer and Edward Livingston Yeomans. Due to his health, he gave up his life's work entirely and engaged in his autobiography, the first volume of which was completed the Saturday night before he died. This volume contains the account of his stay in Italy and includes many reminiscences of Hawthorne and Salvini, the Italian actor.
