Edgar L. "Pete" Mathieu, 69, of Panama City Beach, Fla., passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at his home.

He was born in Pawtucket, R.I., and had lived in Bay County, Fla., since 1976. Pete retired as a master sergeant after 21½ years in the U.S. Air Force, serving two tours in Vietnam. While on a five-year tour in Germany, he coached the All-Star Rhein-Main baseball team, defeating all of Europe. They then represented Europe in the Little League/Big League World Series in 1976, playing against Cuba and Tiawan.

After retirement, Pete and Jane bought the Woodlawn Gulf Station and started Pete's Car Care on Thomas Drive, Edgewater Sunspot and Thomas Drive Sunspot. Pete always was interested in children and family recreation, and while serving as a Panama City Beach councilman from 1980-84, he was instrumental in establishing the Frank Brown Park and Aaron Bessant Pier.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jane Mathieu of Panama City Beach; his children, Kenneth Mathieu of Panama City Beach, Suzanne Cammack and husband, William V., of Panama City, Fla., William Mathieu of Panama City Beach, Michael Mathieu of San Antonio, Texas, and Michele Dorr and husband, Michael, of Panama City Beach; his sisters, Jeanne Carter of Hialeah, Fla., and Annette Cote of Pawtucket, R.I.; his grandchildren, Blake Cammack, Sophia Dorr and Larson Dorr; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church with Father Ted Sosnowski, C.R., officiating. Interment with full military honors by the U.S. Air Force will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, from 6-8 p.m. with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m.

Asked to serve as pallbearers are Paul Casto, Mark Graham, Ben Graham, Carl Price, Richard Mathson, Don Smith, Russell Fuller, Dave Humphreys, Dave Gillis and Cody Kahn.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Pete's name may be made to St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 1214 Moylan Road, Panama City Beach, FL 32407.
