A Rutland County pioneer from Providence Co., RI, Levi was the son of Jeremiah3 Colvin [John2, John1] and Ruth Tucker. He married Lydia Jenks 10 Sep 1763, Scituate, Providence Co., RI. Also a Providence County native, Lydia was born 31 May 1747, and died in Clarendon 21 Dec 1839.

Levi and Lydia were the parents of five known children, all but the youngest born in Rhode Island: Jeremiah [b. 12 Oct 1765; d. after 1819 in Canada], Jonathan [b. 12 Aug 1767; d. 1844, NY], Sanford G. [b. 2 Mar 1770; d. aft 1820, NY], Alpheus [b. 29 Mar 1773; d. 12 Mar 1843, VT] and Safety Colvin [b. 19 Aug 1777; d. 15 Jul 1858, NY].

A Revolutionary War soldier, Levi held the rank of Ensign in the Clarendon militia.

"The State of Vermont. Rolls of the Soldiers in the Revolutionary War, 1775 to 1783," ed. John E. Goodrich [Tuttle, Rutland, VT, 1904], p.p. 57-58, 96, 331, 584:

"A Pay Roll of Capt. Abm. Salisbury’s Company on Otter Creek, raised in Clarendon by advice of committee of Safety and principal inhabitants of the town of Wallonford [sic], Clarendon, Rutland, and Pittsford, on being alarmed by the enemy’s coming to Pittsford, taking some prisoners and plundering some houses."

"A Pay Roll of Capt. Thomas Salisbury’s Company in Col. Gideon Warren’s Regiment of Militia under the command of Levi Colvin, Ensign, in the service of this, and the United States, commencing Nov. 7, 1778, ending as entered in column 3 [dates Nov. 15-18], both days included.

"The above is a true roll, according to the best of my knowledge. Attest, Levi Colvin, Ensign."

The twenty-nine men listed were due a total of 21 pounds, 10 shillings. The pay roll was examined and approved in January 1779.

Ensign Levi Colvin also is listed on the Pay Roll of Capt. Ichabod Robinson’s Company of Militia in Clarendon, credited with 21 days service in 1780 and 13 more in 1781.
