MAHALA ALICE HOTTINGER BARTON
Mahala was remembered as a person of refined manners, with distinct aristocratic proclivities, and as a strong, old-fashioned, bluestocking, religious individual. The Dunkard Brethren Church in Linville, Virginia played an important roll in her life, as a well as, in that of her children. Each Sunday, Mahala, sporting a black bonnet, dressed herself and her children in their black Sunday best and walked to the church. This memory of Mahala was burned deep within that of her daughter, Bertha, who cherished her mother's six inch brimmed black bonnet, sitting in silence as she gazed upon it from time to time through out her lifetime. This prized bonnet is currently in the possession of Mahala's great-granddaughter, Bonnie Moon-Alexander.

Her death was recorded as Mahalia Alice Barton, aged 70y 10m 6d, died at 8:30 a.m. on 14 Jan 1932 in Stow, Summit Co. Ohio, She was a white married female housewife, wife of Issac (sic) N. Barton.
