BLACKSHEAR ‹ Wilbert William Sloan, 77, died Wednesday morning (April 5, 2006), at the Pierce County Nursing Home.

Born in Brantley County, he lived in Pierce County for most of his life. He was a retired mechanic for Pierce Timber where he worked for many years.

He was a son of the late Roma and Ivory Taylor Sloan. His wife, Gertrude Griffis Sloan; a brother, Hubert Sloan, and a stepson, John M. Groover, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include five daughters, JoAnn Jones, Teresa Emmons, Elwanda (Roy) Melton and Velma (Julio) Sosa, all of Blackshear, and Sue (George) Berry, of Dadeville, Ala.; two sons, Lloyd Groover, of Blackshear, and Jed (Terri) Sloan, of Mershon; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Pearson-Treadwell. Burial will be in the Hortense Cemetery.

Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The family will also receive friends at the home of his daughter, Elwanda, 201 N.E. Central Ave., Blackshear, and at the home of his son, Jed, 3825 Lowman Road, Mershon.
