Sam Steven Barklis, a physician, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at home, surrounded by his beloved family.
Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Skyvue Victoria Chapel with a private interment in Skyvue Memorial Gardens.
Dr. Barklis was born May 19, 1925, in Geneva, Ill. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago Medical School. Dr. Barklis was assistant professor-associate professor of biological chemistry at the University of Illinois Medical School before joining the Illinois Neuro-Psychiatric Institute. Following that position he joined CIBA Pharmaceutical as director of the microbiological research division. He moved to Fort Worth to become president of science and technology at Alcon Laboratories. He left to found Aerway Laboratories and BARAKEL Corporation.
In 1988 Dr. Barklis went into clinical practice later co-founding the Anxiety, Mood, and Phobia Center with his wife, Dr. Carolyn Self, where he practiced as a psycho-pharmacologist. He also lectured Friday nights at the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance for 15 years as well as serving as its medical and later its education director.
Dr. Barklis devoted the last 19 years of his life to the treatment of and education about bipolar disorder. His book, "Dr. Samuel and Mr. Hyde," was written for that purpose.
Dr. Barklis held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Dr. Barklis was a member of the Baha'i Faith.
Survivors: His wife, Carolyn Self; brother, Chris; sister, Lou; Ingrid Lid Barklis; five children; nine grandchildren; nieces; nephews; a community of loving friends and former patients as well as Bryan and Janice.
