The 8-year-old German shepherd, a member of the Saginaw Police Department since June 1996, died of cancer.
During his 7-year career, Rookie helped track down felons and root out narcotics for police in Saginaw and neighboring agencies, schools and senior citizen centers over the years. Rookie also was part of a national study on Ground Zero search dogs. He was the first dog diagnosed with cancer among those that helped find victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City. It is unknown whether his work there contributed to the development of the disease. Police dog "Rookie" received full honors and a 21-gun salute Wednesday, July 21, in Saginaw, MI.
