John R. B. Abernathy Died 3:20 this p.m.
Reports from the Wheeler Hospital, just before going to press, are to the effect that Mr. John R. B. Abernathy died at 3:20 p.m. today. Mr. Abernathy underwent an operation Monday about noon, and was apparently making a successful recovery, but late Tuesday night a turn for the worse was made from which he gradually grew worse.

Funeral service for the late John R. B. Abernathy, who died last Wednesday afternoon at 3:20 p.m. was held from the Presbyterian Church here at 3 o'clock last Thursday afternoon.
The spacious little church around the corner was well-filled and to overflowing with friends of the deceased long before the hour designated for the service, and the many out-of-town friends further attested the love and esteem of thousands who had known him as a public official and as a private citizen. At three o'clock the gray casket containing the body of the deceased began its march down the isle of the church to pause momentarily for a few passing words that were to be expressed by a friend representing friends.
Mr. Abernathy was born almost 51 years ago, between LaFayette and Fredonia in Chambers County. The cause of his death was given as appendicitis with complications after an operation for removal, and he was ill only about two days. He was married about 15 years ago to Miss Mamie Wright, of Wetumpka, who survives him.
During early life, Mr. Abernathy's father moved in the Buffalo community and still lives in that section, from there Mr. Abernathy came to LaFayette and had made his home here until his death. For a long period of years he was connected with the office of the probate judge in the capacity of probate clerk, in which position he served with honor and efficiency. It was in this position that he became acquainted with the Chambers County people, and made many friends through service to them. For the past two years he has managed the affairs connected with the business of J. S. Dowdell & Son, and was serving in this capacity at the time of his death.
Mr. Abernathy was a member of the local Presbyterian Church, teacher of the Bible class of this church and figured very prominently in the affairs of his church, always believing that there was only one course for man, the right way, and so lived and conducted himself as to be an example of his belief.
His wife, Mrs. Mamie Wright Abernathy, of LaFayette; father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Abernathy, of Buffalo; four sisters, Mrs. J. M. Maley, Mrs. William House, Misses Allie and Buena Abernathy, all of Chambers County, and one brother, Sam F. Abernathy, of Roanoke, and a large number of relatives and friends survive him.
At four o'clock last Thursday afternoon his body was laid to rest in the beautiful LaFayette Cemetery in the family burying plot with his pastor, Rev. J. M. White, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in charge of the service, and assisted by Rev. T. H. Johnson and Rev. J. B. Lester, of the churches of the city, and Rev. E. H. Abernathy, a cousin of the deceased, of Roanoke.
Active pall bearers were as follows: Ben R. Frazer, of Charlotte, N.C.; E. C. Frazer, of Buffalo; Judge Chas. E. Fuller, J. W. Hollingsworth, H. D. Agnew, W. T. McRae, all of LaFayette, and W. D. Sharpe, of Buffalo.
