Irene Anderson (1929-2009)
Irene Anderson, 79, of Perry St., Greenup, Ky., passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Anderson was born April 10, 1929, in Paintsville, Ky., a daughter of the late Jay and Gertie Salyer Brown.
She formerly worked for DWI in Russell, Ky., and Norris Industries in Ypsilanti, Mich. When she was not working, she was traveling the world to see "The Four Freshman."
She and her husband left Greenup County in 1956 to work and live in Ypsilanti. In the early 1980's, they moved back to Greenup where she became active in the community.
She and Bill bought the old hotel in Greenup and made it into a house for many older friends and people in town. Although she was officially retired, she continued to work and volunteer in many ways up until she became ill in November. She was a Kentucky colonel and a member of the Republican Party.
She was the best mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Anderson Jr.; three brothers, Jay Brown, John Brown and Bob Brown; and four sisters, Gertrude Stapleton, Mary Grizzle, Marjorie LeMaster, and Eloise McFaddin.
She is survived by two sons, Tony (Tina) Anderson of Flatwoods, Ky., and Tim Anderson of Ypsilanti; one daughter, Sheila Anderson of Greenup; one brother, Ray Brown of Niceville, Fla.; two sisters, Loretta Hetzer of Huntington, W.Va., and Marty Bentley of Alexandria, Va.; one special sister-in-law, Geneva Anderson of Greenup, Ky.; 10 grandchildren, Cassie Anderson, Nathan Anderson, Julie Gould, Jennifer Anderson, Christopher Anderson, William Anderson, Josh Gould, Susan Anderson, Autum (Mike) Orata and Matthew Anderson; and six great-grandchildren, Jayden Gould, Lexi Orata, Katie Orata, Jacob Anderson, Allie Orata, and Christian Orata.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Dr. Tom Melvin. Burial will be in Whitt Cemetery in Culp Creek Road, Argillite.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home.
