James Barrett was born in 1846, making him approximately 18 years old when he was recruited to join Co. D, 38TH IND INF on Jan. 29, 1864 (during the time the veteran volunteers of the regiment were home on furlough). Barrett saw plenty of action during his stint in the Union army- from Sherman's Atlanta Campaign and The March to the Sea, to the Carolinas Campaign, the Battle of Bentonville, NC, the "Race to Richmond", and the Grand Review of the Armies in Washington, D.C. He mustered out as a CPL on July 15, 1865.

Barrett, like many thousands of other Union veterans, moved out west after the war to take advantage of new opportunities in virtually untamed lands. He settled in Kansas for a time, from which place he applied for a federal pension on Nov. 18, 1890 (app. #870,244; cert. #658,025 – Kansas). He eventually relocated to Lewis, Colorado, where he passed away at age 81 or 82 on Feb. 25, 1928. His remains are buried in Linn Grove Cemetery, Greeley, Weld Co., CO.
