Barrett, like many thousands of other Union veterans, moved out west after the war to take advantage of new opportunities in virtually untamed lands. He settled in Kansas for a time, from which place he applied for a federal pension on Nov. 18, 1890 (app. #870,244; cert. #658,025 – Kansas). He eventually relocated to Lewis, Colorado, where he passed away at age 81 or 82 on Feb. 25, 1928. His remains are buried in Linn Grove Cemetery, Greeley, Weld Co., CO.
