Edward Bradley Banks, born 15 Apr 1842 in Vernon Township, Washington County, Indiana, was one of eight children of William "Willie" Burr Banks (1813-1857) and Eunice F. Standish (1818-1893). His mother was the daughter of Silas Standish, himself a direct descendant of Capt. Myles Standish who figured prominently in the development of early New England in the 1600s. Capt. Myles Standish was one of the Mayflower passengers and an English military officer hired by the Pilgrims as "military advisor" for their Plymouth Colony. He also played a leading role in the administration and defense of Plymouth Colony from its inception.

Edward Banks's seven known siblings included five brothers and two sisters:

George Washington (1837-1869),
Henry Harrison (1839-1906),
Mary Elizabeth (1846-1892),
James Lyman (1844-1845)
William Franklin (1850-1914),
Eliza A. (1854-1930), and
John Wesley (1857-1917).

Banks was enumerated as a resident of Howard Twp., Washington Co., IN (P.O. – Livonia) at the time of the 1860 & 1870 U.S. Censuses. He was a farmer. At age 19, he enlisted in Co. D, 38th Indiana Infantry in Oct. 1861 but was later discharged in 1862.

After the war, on 16 Jan 1865, Edward married Miss Dora Campbell (1843-1935) in Washington Co., IN. Together they had the following known children:

Robert L. (Nov. 12, 1865 - Aug. 22, 1902),
Ida May (1867-1942),
William "Willie" C. (Nov. 7, 1868 - Sept. 3, 1885),
Benjamin Franklin (1870 - 1943)
Eddie E. (May 30, 1875 - Oct. 7, 1886),
Byrde "Birdie" C. (1877-1923), and
Bessie S. (May 10, 1883 – Apr. 22, 1892).

On Dec. 7, 1886, twenty four years after his Civil War service ended, Banks applied for a federal veteran's pension (app. #590,653; cert. # 992,516). Some time after the war, the Banks family relocated to Nebraska, as Edward was listed in veteran's records as a resident of Grand Isle, NE in 1891. Also, daughter Bessie, age 8, is buried there.

Later, the Banks family moved to Polk Township, Milan, city, Sullivan, Missouri, where Edward passed away on 22 Mar 1909. His wife, Dora, applied for a widow's pension on April 26, 1909 (app. #918,702; cert. #684,118 – Missouri).
