Civil War Veteran - Enlisted on August 9, 1862, and mustered into Company G, 19th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry (Union). Enlistment Rank: Private.

The 19th Iowa Infantry was organized at Keokuk, Iowa, and mustered in for three years of Federal service on August 25, 1862. The Regiment was attached to the District of Southwest Missouri, Dept. of Missouri, to October 1862. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, Army of the Frontier, Dept. of Missouri, to June 1863.

The Regiment moved to Rolla, Mo., on September 11, 1862; thence to Springfield, Mo., on September 16, and to Cassville on October 11, 1862.

Battles, Skirmishes, and Engagements: Battle of Prairie Grove, Ark., (December 7); Siege of Vicksburg (June 14-July 4, 1863); Moved to Port Hudson (July 23) and to Carrollton, La., (August 12-13); Battle of Sterling's Plantation.

Taken Prisoner of War on September 29, 1863, at Atchafalaya, Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Prisoners marched via Alexandria, Natchitoches, Mansfield, and Shreveport to the Camp Ford prison camp near Tyler, Texas, where they arrived on October 23, 1863.

Mustered out of service on July 19, 1865, at Mobile, Alabama.
