The 1890 Veteran Census in Wheeling shows that Robert served in the Civil War: Captain, Co G, 2nd Maryland Infantry (16 Aug 1861-7 Nov 1864) and later Captain, Co D, 2nd Maryland Infantry (11 Mar 1865-29 May 1865). His death notice in the Wheeling Daily Intelligencer referred to him as Captain Robert Cowan, so he apparently was known locally as a veteran.
As of 1910, seven of Robert and Katherine's ten children were living: Charles G, Robert F, Jeanette [later Hoblitzell], Albert H, Catherine C [later Creutzburg], Elizabeth V [later Balzer], and Lester L.
Robert's Ohio County death certificate states that he was buried 29 Nov 1903 in Greenwood Cemetery. Katherine survived him by 32 years and was later buried there, too.
