Ida Bishop Lewelling, the wife of Kansas' first Populist governor, was an ardent reformer and worked diligently with her husband, Lorenzo, in his campaigns. She remained at the family home in Wichita during her husband's term, but the governor's daughter, Jessie, moved to Topeka with her father and served as his official hostess. They lived at the Chesterfield Hotel on Kansas Avenue.

Mrs. L.D. Lewelling, of Arkansas City, wife of the late Governor Lewelling of Kansas, died Tuesday at a hospital in Michigan where she had gone early in the summer for an operation. The funeral will be held in Arkansas City with burial at Wichita. A curious coincidence in connection with Mrs. Lewelling's death is that just seven years ago yesterday her husband, the late Governor L.D. Lewelling, passed away in Arkansas City.
