James Sligh served as Captain of Company F, 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics during the Civil War. He died of wounds received when the train he was on was derailed by Confederate forces. He was the only officer in the regiment killed during the war.


"Sligh, J. W., Capt., F, 1st Michigan Engineers. Oct. 23, 1863. Comm, fracture right leg and simple fracture left leg by railroad accident. Nov. — , 1863. Amp. right leg 4 inches below knee. Surg. B.
