HELP- LOCATING FACTS ABOUT HIS PARENTS LIVING IN OHIO WHERE CURTIS ABBOTT LIVED AND STATED ON ALL CENSUS RECORDS THAT HE WAS BORN IN OHIO

Obituary from the Dufur Dispatch, July 1901:

C J Abbott died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Foreman, at Wapinitia, Last Sunday night, at the age of 76. Mr. Abbott was born in Miami County, Ohio, and at an early day he crossed the plains to California. Coming from there to Oregon he settled at Wapinitia, where he has resided ever since. He was a kind hearted man, a good citizen and held in high esteem by a large circle of friends, which extended to all parts of the county. The Deceased leaves three daughters and two sons - J. P. and J.C. Abbott, Mrs. B.S. Foreman and Mrs. Samuel Brown, who all reside at Wapinitia and were at his bedside at the time of his death, and Mrs. C. J. Washburn, of Ohio - Dufur Dispatch, 7/1901

NOTES BY GRANDAUGHTER BARBARA A IN CA
Catherine Dils and Curtis G. Abbott were married in Miami, Ohio in 8/29/1847. After the birth of their first child Eliza in 1848 they moved to Indiana, settling in St. Joseph County. They had 4 more children Joseph, who married Mary Zoe Delore, Sarah who married Cassius Washburn, James who married Clara Pegg and Mary who married Sam Brown.

Curtis left Indiana in 1857 or 1858 for California and after some mining, raised hogs in Humboldt County (source was a note from another granddaughter). He later brought the first sheep to Oregon and Prineville and was one of the earliest settlers on the flat (source a picture and note from grandson. In 1876 his son Joseph Abbott moved to Oregon, his brother James followed the next year 1877. His wife Catharine and daughters Eliza and Mary came in 1884. No known record if Curtis and Catharine ever divorced after so many years being separated. They are buried next to each other at Kelly Cemetery in Oregon.

FAMILY NOTES PROVIDED BY GRANDSON STUART
Family history states -The Abbott's crossed the plains in an Immigrant Train by Railroad arriving in The Dalles, Oregon in April of 1884. They got Emigrant tickets and could cook in these cars as they were equipped with stoves. Coming at this time was Eliza Abbot who married Benjamin Forman and her sister Mary Abbot, who later married Sam Brown and their mother Catharine Abbot. Their brother Joseph had been in this Country and went back to escort them from Elkhart, Indiana. Others that came at the same time believed to be related to the Abbott's were the Christian Confer family. Sarah remained in Indiana with her family.

Curtis was a very prominent man and was one of the leading stock breeders in Oregon. He was known as a liberal, enterprising and good man.

Family stories state he buried much of his wealth in Oregon.

NOTE 1:His birthdate was given as March 1824 on the 1900 census, but his calculated birthdate (from age at death according to cemetery records) is 24 April 1824.

NOTE 2:Since Curtis was buried 02 July 1901 (according to Kelly Cemetery burial records), if his obituary from "July 1901" stated that he died "last Sunday night" in Wapinitia, that would make his death date 30 June 1901, two days before his burial in Kelly Cemetery. kmh.
