In 1908 in Van Buren County, Arkansas he married Myrtle Jane "Mertie" Bryant.
Joe and Myrtie built their home on the Van Buren and Conway County Line just off of what is now known as Hwy 9 at Formosa, AR. Joe was a farmer, cattleman and horsetrader. They had 2 children: Bernice (married Doy Walton Bell) and James Melankton "Lank" (married Erma Lee Malone).
