EVELYN ZUMWALT THOMAN Of Hayward, passed away July 20, 2005, at the age of 83. She was born August 21, 1921, and reared in and near Klamath Falls, Ore., receiving both her elementary and high school certificates there. After graduation, she worked for over two years as a secretary in small firms in and near Klamath Falls. In 1942 she and her mother moved to the Los Angeles area, where she enrolled in Los Angeles City College. On Nov. 1, 1942, she met Richard S. Thoman and on Nov. 28, four weeks later, she married him. To this union was born a son, Gordon Richard Thoman, on June 25, 1944. Devoted grandmother of Camille, Alexis, Kylie, Maxwell, Amy and Eric. Dear sister of Clyde Zumwalt and his wife, Cleo. Dear aunt of Laura Zumwalt and Linda Roth. Also survived by her extended family, Timothy Tillman and his sons, Nathan and Austin. The Thomans lived in several places, California, Alabama, Colorado, Maine, Missouri, Illinois, West Germany, Nebraska, northern Virginia and Ontario, Canada, before settling in the Bay Area. She supported her husband, both emotionally and financially, as he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Professionally, such support took the form of key positions in various organizations, the University of Colorado, an independent group providing the day care in Gorham, Maine, the U.S. Soil Conversation Service at Columbia, Mo., the Northern Virginia Regional Planning Commission near Washington, D.C., a law office in Chicago, Ill., the Omaha City Planning Agency in Nebraska, a group helping emotionally disturbed children in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the Woodland Estates Community Association in Hayward, Calif., and the Hayward Chapter of the League of Women Voters. In addition she typed and edited several of her husband's books. In short, she gave mightily of herself, both personally and professionally. Friends are invited to attend the funeral from Sorensen Bros. Mortuary, 1140 B St., Hayward, Calif., on Friday, July 29, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. Visitation at the mortuary Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m. Interment: Lone Tree Cemetery, Hayward, Calif. SORENSEN BROS.
