Mrs. Katherlne Burkholder, widow of Jesse Burkholder and the only surviving member of the old Shaver family in Rockingham, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph S. Rice, near Broadway Sunday afternoon in her ninety-eighth year. Mrs. Burkholder had been in failing health for the past five or six years, due to the infirmities of old age. She was probably the oldest resident of the county and her entire life had been spent within its borders.

Up to a few years ago her mind was clear and she retained full possession of her faculties. For the past three weeks she had been gradually growing weaker and for several days her death had been expected at any time. The end came peacefully at 4 o'clook.

The funeral will be held this morning from Antioch Christian church. The funeral procession will leave Broadway at 7 o'clock, reaching the church about 10 o'clock. The services will be conducted by Revs. H. C. Moore and W. T. Walters, of the Christian church, who will probably be assisted by one or more ministers of other denominations.

Mrs. Burkholder was born in the stone house on the old Shaver homestead, near Edon December 25, 1809, and reached her ninety-seventh birthday last Christmas Day. She was the eldest daughter of George Shaver, father of George W. Shaver, whose death occurred December 20 at his home near Edon. Her mother was Hannah Sites, a member of the well known Rockingham family of that name.

On June 8, 1832, she married Jesse Burkholder, the fifth son of Martin Burkholder, who died at his home on the Bowman's Mill road, one mile west of Edom, ten or twelve years ago. Mrs. Burkholder had lived in the vicinity of Edom until the death of her husband, when she went to Broadway to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Rice.

When a girl she united with the Christian church in the old building which for years stood on the site of the present Antioch church, near Greenmount. She was the oldest communicant of that denomination in the county and retained her membership at Antioch until her death. Mrs. Burkholder was a woman of devout Christian character and throughout her entire life of nearly a century she was esteemed and respected by a large circle of acauaintances. She was familiarly known to many in the vicinity of Edon as "Aunt Katie."

Surviving Mrs. Burkholder are five children : Mrs. Rebecca Neff, of Montana; Mrs. Fannie Samuels, of Iowa; Mrs. Octavia Rice and Miss Mary C. Burkholder, of Broadway; and George E. Burkholder, of Fort Scott. Kans. Another daughter, Amanda, died some years ago. Through the Shaver and Burkholder families Mrs. Burkholder was related to a large number of people in Linville District, as well as other parts of the county.
