He was part of the 395th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division and was killed in action on hill 627 in Germany a few hundred yards from the Belgium border during the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war his remains were deemed unrecoverable by the Army. On Tuesday, 17 April 2001, his remains were found by 2 Belgiums who were part of the MIA Project.
He is listed on the wall of the missing at Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium. However, now there is a bronze rosette next to his name signafying he is no longer missing. He was burried at Arlington National Cemetery on 18 July 2002.
His brother Verne received the flag that drapped his casket. When presenting it the chaplin said these words...
"Sir, I present this flag to you and your family on behalf of a greatful nation as an expression of our appreciation for the service and sacrifice that David gave to our country. I hope the flag will serve as a reminder to all that freedom is not free. It often costs us the lives of young soldiers like David".
