Elisha H. J. Strickland was born in Alabama to James and Nancy (Wilson) Strickland. He married Susan Catherine Graves on January 30, 1851. They were the parents of Emiline Jane, James Asbury, Elisha W., Eliza F., John Mackey, and Thomas Jefferson Strickland.

Elisha enlisted in CSA on July 4, 1862 in Calhoun County Arkansas. He was a Pvt. in the 24th Arkansas Infantry, Company G. He did not return from the War. He died after December 31, 1862.

His wife, Susan Catherine (Graves) Strickland filed for his CSA pension and it was awarded on September 9, 1901.

*Pilgrims Patriots Pioneers made the following suggestion regarding Elisha's burial information:

"Elisha’s name is on a memorial at Confederate Cemetery at Arkansas Post in Arkansas County, Arkansas. He served as a private in 24th AR, Co. G, Port Lock Reg. Inf., July 21-August 31, 1862, enlisted June 4, 1860, in service July 21-Dec. 3, 1862, enlisted by J. W. Frost in Calhoun Co., AR....
He was buried in Army cemetery at Arkansas Post Memorial, AR, located off Highway 165 north of Dumas, AR."
