Elcano, Isadore John "Izzy"
Isadore "Izzy" John Elcano was born on January 22, 1922 south of Greenfield near Bakersfield, CA. He was the second son and child of Miguel Elcano and Gladys Johnson Elcano. Izzy was a sixth generation California and a truly proud "son of the golden west." Izzy is survived by three sisters, Velma Sprowl, Martina Sparks, and Gladys Williams; five children: three daughters, Mary Anne Pimentel, Kimberly Alison Davis, and Anita Whitbey; and two sons, William Elcano and Michael Barrett; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Izzy was born into a farming family and it was in that home that he developed his life long appreciation and love of all things agricultural. He cherished farming - the raising of crops and herds through out his life and he would dedicate himself to that proud vocation. He attended General Shafter Elementary School. After his father passed away in a farm accident, Izzy would assist his mother and older brother in maintaining the family farm and raising his younger brother and sisters from that time on. Izzy attended Kern County High School (now Bakersfield High School) where his studies would focus on agriculture and mathematics. He was an active member and an elected officer in KCHS's chapter of the Future Farmers of America and represented that chapter at the national level. Izzy was a member of the KCHS's Driller Junior Varsity football team. Izzy enlisted in the United States Navy in early 1942. After completing "boot camp" and hydro electronics training he received orders to the Navy's Atlantic fleet. Before being deployed he married his high school sweetheart, Vera Breithaupt. Izzy was assigned to the USS Butler, a destroyer, and served as the lead gunner's mate on the ships first gun turret. He first saw action in the battle of the Atlantic; Operation Torch near Casablanca; Operation Husky - the allied invasion of Sicily; Operation Avalanche - the allied invasion on the Italian mainland; Operation Overlord - D-Day; and finally Operation Anvil - the allied landings at Marseilles in southern France. After receiving a much decorated and very honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Izzy returned home to Bakersfield and dedicated himself to farming and the raising of a family. He primarily raised cotton, alfalfa and Suffolk sheep. In addition Izzy had the best herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle ever to paw the Kern Delta dirt. He was and made Rancho Elcano Angus. Izzy was married to Vera for 24 years. Divorced in 1968. He married Loretta Tripp and they were married for 12 years. Izzy loved boxing, wrestling, fishing and hunting of any kind. He always believed the needs of his neighbors came before his own needs and he acted in such accord. Isadore John Elcano began his eternal life in the early afternoon hours of January 8, 2009. He will be greatly missed. Visitation is Wednesday, January 14, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Basham Funeral Care, 3312 Niles Street.
