John Frederick Hughes was born September 24, 1946 in Pasadena, Texas, to parents Frederick Reynolds and Vivian Mae (Winks) Hughes. He grew up in Pasadena and attended Milby High School.

On October 13, 1977, John married his second wife, Sylvia Josephine (Mallett) Hughes, in Pasadena, Texas. They made their home in Pasadena until 1979 when they moved to Industry.

John worked security in Alaska on the Alaskan Pipeline.
He was employeed by Wackenhut as a security guard for NASA. For 10 years, he was employed by Burleson Surveying in Bellville and drove for several local trucking companies. He was currently employed by Statewide Transportation.

An active scuba diver, John, along with Syliva, owned and operated Goin' Down Divers, Inc. in Katy. John loved hunting and fishing, and motorcycling with Sylvia. Both John and Sylvia were active members of the American Paint Horse Association. A devoted grandfather, he enjoyed teasing and spending time with the grandkids.

John and Sylvia passed away suddenly Friday, May 13, 2005 when the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a car. They are survived by their daughter and son-in-law: Lela and Micheal Kohring of Brenham, sons and daughter-in-laws: Larry & Rhonda Hughes of Bellville, John "Sunny" and Shanon Hughes, Chas and Susan French; all of Conroe; grandchildren: Marshal and Wyatt Kohring, Chase, Brooke and Angelica French, Hayley Hughes and Shaye Sontag. They are also survived by Sylvia's sister: Kay and husband David Ham or Palestine; John's brother Don and wife Faye Hughes of Rohmayor; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and many dear friends. They were preceded in death by their parents.

A memorial service was held at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at the Bellville High School auditorium with Reverend Sonny Rice officiating.
