A graduate of Bolton High School in Alexandria, he attended Louisiana Tech University before enlisting in the Coast Artillery in December of 1942.He served in the Army until he was wounded in Germany in May of 1945. His abiding interest in machines, mechanical or electrical, guided his working years. Only the pleasure of fishing could rival his excitement over the latest electronic device. Bill was a member of the American Legion in Alexandria. He was employed in Shreveport at Lyons Petroleum Co. and later in the City of Alexandria Engineering Department. His later years were lived in Shreveport where his children were happy to have him involved in the activities of his extended family.
Survivors are his two daughters, Brenda Herbert Snider and Gail Herbert Flett and her husband, Buddy, of Shreveport; two sons, William Craig Herbert and wife, Carrie, of Orlando, Florida and Scott Harrington Herbert and wife, Denise, of Shreveport; five grandchildren, Shannon Bryant and daughters, Brittony and Gracey, of Shreveport, Shaun Snider and wife, Melissa, of Haughton, Shane Bryant and wife, Jessica, and their son, Liam, of Austin, Texas, Michael Herbert and Andrew Herbert both of Houston, Texas; sister, Henrietta Herbert Cragon and husband, Harvey, of Dallas, Texas; and first cousin, Dorothy Adams Heacock, of Aliso Viejo, California.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 11, 2009 in Greenwood Cemetery, Pineville.
