John G. "Jack" Thweatt, age 76, passed away Sunday, January 4th at his home after a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlotte Goss Thweatt, his daughter Sandra Thweatt Funk and husband Terry of High Point, NC and son Jim Thweatt and wife Nancy of Finksburg, MD. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Garrett, Sean and Griffin Thweatt and Laura and Gregory Funk. Additionally he leaves behind a caring community of family friends and caregivers. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Gladys McGee Thweatt, formerly of Forsyth, GA, and sister Rosanne Willingham, formerly of Macon, GA.
Jack was born November 21, 1932 in Norton, Virginia and raised in Forsyth, Georgia. He graduated from Mary Persons High School in 1949. He attained a BS degree from Georgia Institute of Technology where he was a member of the Naval ROTC program and the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy and served for 22 months on the USS Iowa, before being transferred to the Naval Supply Corps School where he graduated first in his class. Upon leaving active service, he joined the Naval Reserve from which he retired as a Commander in 1993. He returned to Georgia Tech and earned a Ph.D in organic chemistry in 1961. He accepted a position with Tennesee Eastman Kodak from which he retired after 32 years, and was an American Chemical Society Emeritus member.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Kingsport, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Senior Adult Director and Sunday School class teacher, and chaired or served on numerous committees. He served on the Constitution and By-Laws committee for the Tennessee Baptist Convention. He served on the boards of the Kingsport and Johnson City Symphony Orchestras, the Kingsport Symphony Chorus and the Kingsport Civitans. He volunteered for Interfaith Hospitality Network, Celebrate Recovery, Sullivan County Imagination Library, Holston Valley Community Hospital and Lifeline program, and the Sullivan Central High School Band Boosters. He loved crossword puzzles, sports and gardening and was well known for the lovely tea roses that he shared with friends and family. As an avid duplicate bridge player, he was a club director and life master for the American Contract Bridge League. Above all else, he valued his faith in God and loved his family.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 7 at First Baptist Church, Kingsport, at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Officiating ministers will be Rev. Marvin Cameron, Rev. Ron Davis and Rev. Walter Crouch.
