Passing of John R. Jones

He Was One of the Early-Day Settlers in Butler County.

After several months of illness, a part of which time he suffered much pain, John R. Jones was relieved off his early ills on Wednesday evening, January 24th at 10:15 o'clock, when he passed on. He had been ill seven months and was bed-fast the past two months. Death was due to a malignant growth in his throat. He died at his home in the northeast part of town.

Rev. J. J. Bell will conduct the funeral services which will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Baptist church. Burial will be in the David City cemetery.

Mr. Jones was born in Utica, New York, and when a small child he moved with his parents to Wisconsin and later to Minnesota. When a young man he went to Iowa and engaged in farming in Boone county for several years.

He was united in marriage to Miss Kesiah Ham on December 27, 1868 in Boone, Iowa. To Mr. and Mrs. Jones seven children were born, four of whom are living. Two of the children, Mrs. Jennie Bradley and E. R. Jones, live in David City, a son, Roy, lives in Tampa, Florida, and a daughter, Mrs. Nelia McClintor [McClintic], is a resident of New Virginia, Iowa. Mrs. McClintor [McClintic] has been here for over two months assisting in caring for her father. Mrs. Mary Walden, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jones, died seven years ago and two sons, Henry and John, died in infancy.

Besides his wife and four children Mr. Jones has a brother, W. R. Jones of Rolfe, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. Lorenzo Snyder of David City and Mrs. J. R. Lansing of South Bend. There was a reunion of Mr. Jones and his brother and sisters this winter in David City, an occasion that was very enjoyable to all. On account of illness W. R. Jones and Mrs. Lansing will be unable to come to the funeral.

Mr. Jones was an early-day settler of Butler county. He came here with his family in 1871 and homesteaded land one mile east of David City. Living there ten years, the Jones family moved to David City and Mr. Jones has lived here until his death. He was engaged in draying for several years.

Mr. Jones was in his 71st year. He was born August 13, 1846. On his last birthday anniversary he was presented with a well-filled purse, a gift from his many friends, and he was just as well remembered on many other occasions during his long illness.
