Tobias Medina Sr., 73, a resident of Las Vegas and a retired maintenance superintendent for the Department of Transportation and cattle rancher, passed away on Sunday following an extended illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Leon and Estefanita Gallegos Medina; his wife, E. G. Medina, and a brother, Pedro Medina.

He is survived by his long-time companion and caregiver, Mary J. Griego of Las Vegas, N.M.; two daughters: Yvonne Medina of Las Vegas and Ramona Medina Pacheco and husband Gabriel of Pecos, N.M.; one son, Tobias Medina Jr. of Las Vegas, N.M.; his stepchildren: Joseph Griego and wife Donna and Chuck Griego all of Las Vegas, N.M.; his grandsons: Jacob and Vicente Jaramillo of Las Vegas, N.M., Elias and Ramon Pacheco of Pecos, Tobias Medina III and Francisco Medina all of Las Vegas, N.M.; his step granddaughters: Jolene, April, Melissa, and Kimberly Griego all of Las Vegas, N.M.; three sisters: Dora Mayberry and husband Garland of Rocky Ford, Colo., Angie Sexton and husband Jerry of Santa Rosa, N.M., and Delia vigil and husband Raymond of Las Vegas, N.M.; one brother, Samuel Medina of Maes, N.M.; and by several nieces and nephews.

Toby as he was affectionately known, was born in Maes on June 14, 1935. He was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army in 1958 and had worked on cattle ranches in Wyoming prior to coming back to New Mexico. He worked for the County of San Miguel as a heavy equipment operator and then worked highway construction.

He was a maintenance superintendent for the Department of Transportation for 29 years. He retired in 1993. After his retirement he enjoyed his cattle ranch near Maes.

A life-long Catholic, he was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church and the Sociedad de San Jose.

A visitation will be held today from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd.

All services will be conducted from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary this evening at 7 and the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Wednesday at 9 a.m. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass.

The interment will follow in the Medina Family Cemetery near Maes, N.M. Serving as casket bearers will be Leroy Garcia, Delfido, Urbano, George, Gilbert, and Felipe Medina. Honorary bearers will be his grandsons and step-granddaughters. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Heating and Air Conditioning fund at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 403 Valencia, Las Vegas, N.M. 87701.
