Deceased Name: Bette J. Allen

Bette June Allen died January 2, 2009, due to complications caused by an infection. Bette was the daughter of Lyda and Clive Heckenlively and was born June 4, 1926, in Norfolk, Nebraska . Bette grew up in Kearney and Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School. She attended the University of Nebraska and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1948, where she was president of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity. Bette married Bruce E. Allen of Lincoln, Nebraska , in December, 1948 and they moved to Bartlesville, OK with Phillips Petroleum. Subsequently, Bette and Bruce moved to Lausanne, Switzerland while Bruce studied at Ecole Polytechnic. After their time in Europe, Bette and Bruce moved to Grand Island to work for Bruce's father, M.H. Allen, at Allen's Self Service Drugs. In 1953, they moved to North Platte, Nebraska , to open and operate Allen's Self Service Drug Store. Bette and Bruce had six children, Michael, Lisa, Sara, Anna, Ginna and Julia.

Bette was very involved with Church of Our Savior Episcopal Church, participating in Altar Guild, Vestry, Daughters of the King and Bible Study.
Bette was an active member of P.E.O. (Chapter EB) and Art Study League. She enjoyed traveling, cooking and playing bridge. Bette was an avid reader and had a passionate interest in people and their lives.

Bette was predeceased by her husband, Bruce, who died on December 24, 2005. They had been married for 57 years. She was also predeceased by her sister-in-law, brother-in-law and niece, Colonel William O. Peak III, Bernice Peak and Barbara Peak, who died tragically in 1972.

Bette is survived by her six children and three nieces, Michael C. Allen, of Houston, TX; Lisa Huebner (John), of Hershey, NE; Sara Curry (Lynn), of Richland, WA; Anna McLean (Scott), of Houston, TX; Ginna Claussen (Rich), of Lincoln, NE; Julia Arneson (Tucker), of Ft. Collins, CO; Kathy Peak Dunbar, of McLean, VA; Patricia Peak Klintberg (Steve), of Arlington, VA; and Elizabeth Peak Cross (Steve), of Arlington, VA. Bette is also survived by her brother, Jack Heckenlively, of La Quinta, CA, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Georgene Allen, of Hastings, NE. Bette's other nieces and nephews were, Kristin Allen, Eric Allen (Melanie), Bryant Allen, Jay Heckenlively (Andrea), and Kent Heckenlively (Linda). Bette had 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many great nieces and nephews.

Bette enjoyed life to its fullest and loved her family and friends intensely.
Her front door was always open and her home was the gathering place for many; there was always room at the table for one more guest. Bette was the spiritual and emotional center of her family.

Memorials can be made to the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, P. O. Box 1247, North Platte, NE 69103.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at the Episcopal Church of our Savior with the Reverend Ellie Thober officiating.

Burial will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, near Maxwell.

Visitation will be today from 9a.m. to 9p.m. at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.
