Nehemiah May was a son of Elizabeth Bugbee and Nehemiah Lyon. He had 9 siblings: Samuel K., Mehitable, Walter (died before 5 months old), Baxter, Betty, Lucretia, Sally, Walter and Benjamin. His family moved to CT then on to Craftsbury, VT. He had one 1/2 brother, Samuel Rinsley Lyon, from his father's 2nd marriage to Hannah Snell.
Nehemiah May married Sally Durrell February 27, 1814 in Danville, Vermont. They had 8 children: Royal Corbin (possibly named after a peer of Nehemiah's, Hon. Royal Corbin lived in the same small town and he and Nehemiah died within a year of each other.), Baxter, Sarah Maria, William Huntington, Augustus, Judah, Marcus and Martha (twins).

In the 1820 census he is listed as being in Agriculture for occupation. He is also listed as a farmer in the Lyon family history book listed on google.
