Born in Lebanon, Ohio, she came to St. Louis before the Civil War and obtained a position as a teacher. Her father, who was a merchant for many years in St. Louis owned a store on the site of the present Merchants-Laclede Building.
Miss Bacon taught in many of the city schools and was principal of the Carr School. The last two years of her educational career were spent as principal of the Penrose School. After retirement, she devoted herself to the organizations with which she was connected. She came to be known as "mother" to hundreds of students who went on to become prominent in the business and professional world of St. Louis.
Miss Bacon was a member of the Board of the Memorial Home and was identified with the Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century. Up until her final illness she was active in work of the many charities and was particularly prominent in her efforts on behalf of soldiers and sailors.
