John J. Golarz, age 93, passed away Saturday, December 27th, at Bell Trace Health and Living Center in Bloomington, IN, where he was a resident since 2007.

He was born December 16th, 1915, in East Chicago, IN, to Joseph Anthony and Mary (Fron) Golarz. He is survived by his four children, Raymond (Marion) Golarz of Bloomington, IN, Joseph (Mary) Golarz of Vanderbilt, MI, Barbara (Carl) Holmuth of Hammond, IN, and John (Diane) Golarz of Portage, IN. He is also survived by his twenty-two grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Rose Korol of Michigan City, IN, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen (nee-Grelak). Their marriage was from 1937 until her death in 1976. Others that preceded him in death his firstborn son, one-day-old Joseph; his parents; three brothers, Walter, Andrew and infant brother; two sisters, Katherine Kosiba and Anna Banchich.

John was a member of St. Catherine of Sienna Church. He attended St. Mary's School in Hammond and was the class valedictorian in 1930. A Roman Catholic all his life, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and achieved The Degree of Fourth Knight in that organization. While living in Bloomington since February of 2007, he was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Center.

John attended and graduated from Hammond High School in 1934, where he played football under Coach Carl Huffine and wrestled under Coach Scott. During the height of the Depression he and his brother Walter (Wolf) played semi-professional football for the Hammond Yellowjackets through 1936. During the depression, John worked in the CC Camps and was part of a group that planted trees and did land work at Shakamak State Park in Southern Indiana. A love of the outdoors remained with him all his life and he took his family on many trips to state parks and historical locations.

John's primary life's work was a steelworker. Hired in 1940 by Inland Steel (Mittal), he was a first helper for many years. He held this position of Melder for several years before his retirement in 1979. He enjoyed discussing with friends and family his early experiences in the company houses at Pullman Standard during the Depression, his experience of riding the railways on a "bum" during his youth, including a trip to Washington, D.C., with WWI vets to demand benefits. John loved football and boxing. He had a rich baritone voice and enjoyed singing Polish hymns with family. He had a great love of his Polish ancestry and along with all his grandchildren, many people called him Dziadzia (Grandfather Polish).

Friends may visit with family on Monday, January 5th, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9080 Kleinman in Highland, IN. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 6th, at 12:00 noon at St. Catherine of Sienna in Hammond with Father Larry Kew officiating. Interment will be at St. John Cemetery in Hammond, IN.
