WHITAKER of Ardmore, Mrs. Gus OSMUS, Mrs. Verge HERRIN and Mrs. George SACHS of Bevier, Macon Co., MO. He married 22 September, 1865 to MO HURT of Bynumville, Chariton Co., MO. He served in the Union Army for more than 3 years. Member of the Congregrational Church. The funeral and interment will be held in Bevier, Macon Co., MO.

Passing of a Civil War Veteran J. W. Whitaker, an old and highly esteemed citizen, fell dead in his home early Sunday morning. His death came as a great shock to the community. He was a veteran of the Civil War. The funeral occurred from the First Baptist church Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. W. R. Skinner of Macon. The remains were laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery with military honors. Further mention of the passing of this aged citizen will be made next week.

John W. Whitaker
The deceased was born in Pulaski county, Kentucky, September 25, 1843. He came to Missouri with his parents settling at Bloomington, and later to Chariton county, near Bynumville where Mr. Whitaker grew to manhood. At the age of eighteen he enlisted in Company A, 23rd Missouri Infantry with which he served throughout the Civil War, the regiment being one of those which accompanied General Sherman on his March to the sea. On July 18, 1865 Mr. Whitaker received his honorable discharged near Louisville, Kentucky.
On September 22, 1865, he wedded Miss Missoura Anna Hurt and to their union twelve children were born, eight of whom survive. They are: William T. Whitaker, Mrs. Charles O. Barnes, George Whitaker, Mrs. John W. Johnson, of Ardmore; Mrs. Gus Ossman, Mrs. Virgil Herrin and Mrs. George Sachs, Bevier. He is also survived by his widow and twenty-seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Mr. Whitaker was a good and useful citizen and an esteemed member of the First Congregational church. The funeral occurred from the home, as mentioned in the last weeks issue of the Appeal and the remains were laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery, the casket being shrouded in the Stars and Stripes, the flag he had loved and served under in life. As the casket was lowered into the grave, taps was sounded by W. A. Watkins, acting as buglar. Mr. Whitaker was 76 years, 3 months and 24 days of age.
