San Francisco Mayor, Murder Victim. In 1976, San Francisco Mayor George Moscone appointed Harvey Milk to the Board of Permit Appeals. Milk fought for and won San Francisco's gay rights ordinance despite anti-gay City Supervisor Dan White. White resigned from the Moscone administration but then wanted his job back. Moscone turned him down and on November 27, 1978, White shot and killed both Moscone and Milk. That same night, 40,000 people holding candles marched into the streets of San Francisco in their honor. During his funeral, his body lay in state alongside Milk's. The assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk ended up launching the political career of California Senator Dianne Feinstein. Feinstein became Mayor of San Francisco after the assassination of Moscone. In 1990, she ran for Governor of California and lost a close election to Republican Senator Pete Wilson. In 1992, she was elected to the United States Senate, taking the seat vacated by Wilson when he became Governor.
