Joe was born in Lithuania and was the son of William Jurkšas and Helen Kubilas. He migrated from his homeland and arrived in Shamokin, PA in 1903 where his sister Magdaline lived with her husband William Grinkevich. His brother Anthony lived there as well with his bride Helen. The brothers changed their surname to York and found employment at the collieries in Shamokin and then at the Steger & Sons Piano Factory in Steger, Illinois. Joe married Sarah Svetal on 22 Feb 1909 at Saint Liborius Catholic Church in Steger, and lived most of their lives in the Chicago area. They were parents to John York and Anna York Martinkus.
