Angeline Smith, 62, a Chickaloon village leader, died Dec. 24 at Alaska Native Medical Center. A funeral service was held at Kehl's Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Polly Dozier of Unity of Anchorage officiating. A visitation was held at the chapel.
Ms. Smith was born Sept. 26, 1926, in Chickaloon. In the early '40s she moved to Anchorage. She was the daughter of Annie Nicolai, an Ahtna Athabascan from Copper River, and Leland Harrison, a gold miner and Alaska railroad maintenance man. In the early '70s, she was the organizing chief of the village of Chickaloon. She fought for village status with local, state and federal agencies and ultimately secured that status, obtaining 67,000 acres of land for Chickaloon. She continued leading the village through the '70s and was on the board of directors of Chickaloon village at the time of her death. During the construction of the Alaska pipeline she was one of the first Teamster women truck drivers and she operated a 40ton rig in both Valdez and Glennallen camps. Ms. Smith also owned and operated a taxi business in Anchorage from 1963 until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed sewing and was a seamstress. Ms. Smith was a member of Teamsters Union Local 959.
She leaves her daughters, Katherine Johnson, of Anchorage, and Bonnie Skinner, of Fairbanks; her sons, Jesse Lanman, Gary Stevig and Gaylor Lanman, all of Anchorage; her sisters, Mabel Hall and Helen Depriest, both of Anchorage, Katie Wade and Shirley Sorensen, both of Sutton; her brothers, Norman and Harold Olson, both of Oregon, and Albert Harrison, of California; and seven grandchildren. Burial was in Angelus Memorial Park. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Anchorage, 3605 Arctic Blvd., Suite 555, Anchorage 99503.
