Mary was a daughter of David Crockett Snodgrass and Minerva Brown. She married George William Compton in Sparta, White County, Tennessee 8 June 1852. They moved to Crawford, Osage County, Missouri, about 1861, then to Newton, Taney County, sometime before 1870. Mary died there after giving birth to nine children:
