Rev. George Wesley Lantrip's earliest known ancestor is believed to be John Lanthrope, born ca. 1660 near Middlesborough in Yorkeshire, England. John Lanthrope emmigrated to Henrico Co., VA in America in 1679, securing passage as an indentured servant of Benjamin Hatcher and John Milner.
Five generations later, George Wesley Lantrip and his twin brother James were born to Thomas and Lucy (Raiford) Lantrip on Aug. 3, 1818 in Mississippi. The twins had at least three more siblings: Sarah, William C., and Joseph B. George Lantrip married Mary Ann Baggett circa 1841, probably in Mississippi. They apparently had twelve children in all, though information is known about only five of them. In 1850 George and James Lantrip were listed in the 1850 Census for Perry Co. Mississippi as farmers.
Sometime between 1859 when George and Mary Ann's son John Wesley was born in Louisiana, and 1870, when they are found in the Census for that year, the family moved to Milam Co., Texas. The Lantrips settled in what became known as Liberty Community, bought land, and continued to farm. George was ordained a deacon in the Methodist Church in 1875, serving supply situations where he lived. He was described as a circuit rider in family lore. George's nephew Malachi was also an ordained Methodist minister, as was his grandson-in-law, Charlie Robinson.
