CONFEDERATE SOLDIER:
Pvt. Thomas Jefferson Caudle, Co C "Montgomery Volunteers", 23rd NC Infantry Regiment. Residing in Montgomery County, NC when he enlisted at age 23 on 27 May 1861. Records show that he was present or accounted for until wounded at Cold Harbor, Va on27 Jun 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Present or accounted for until reported missing at Spotsylvania Court House, Va on 12 May 1864. Returned to duty subsequent to 31 Dec 1864. Listed as POW "Prisoner of War" at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 Apr 1865. Paroled 9 Apr 1865 after taking Oath of Allegiance and returned to Anson County, NC. He was with the 23rd North Carolina at Gettysbury on 1 Jul 1863 when the 23rd suffered 283 casualties out of 336 officers and men (84% casualties) when the ill gotten plan of Gen. Iverson resulted in such destruction. The area where such casualties occurred became famous and was named Iverson's Pit.

Three brothers, Thomas Jefferson, Absalom A., and Genison D. all fought at Gettysburg. Absalom and Genison were in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863.
Thomas is the husband of Mary Jane Andrews Caudle b. 20 Aug 1840, Montgomery County, NC, d. 18 Mar 1925, Anson County, NC. He is the son of Jesse W. Caudle and Abigail Andrews Caudle. He is the father of Martha Jane Caudle Hildreth #34985424 the wife of William Harrison Hildreth #34985287 of Ansonville and Anne Elizabeth Caudle Braswell the wife of David H. Braswell.
After the war, Thomas was very active in the UCV "United Confederate Veterans" Camp in Polkton, NC. On 22 Feb 1881 he was elected Captain of the UCV Camp. NEWSPAPER ABSTRACT:
ANSON TIMES (Wadesboro,NC)--Thursday, Feb 21, 1881---"At the annual election of officers of the Anson Guards, held in Polkton on the 22nd, the following gentlemen were elected: Capt. T.J. Caudle, 1st Lieut., J.H. Benton, 2nd Lieut., J.W. Gale,Jr., 2nd Lieut., M.L. Horn, the company is in an active and flourishing condition."
